About this web site

Originally these web pages were all laboriously hand crafted using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and HTML (Hyper Text Mark Up Language) but I have now converted this website over to Joomla which is just one of the many open source web site Content Management Systems (CMS) that comes free with the Vidahost web site hosting package.  This makes it much easier to set up, change and manage individual pages or the whole web site, build menus, etc.  If you prefer to use a different CMS application to build your website then all of the most popular software is also included e.g. WordPress (Click here to see my test WordPress web site), Drupal, Concrete5, etc, and is available for you to choose from from your own web site control panel (cPanel).  Should you want to set up your own on-line shop then the TSOHOST (formerly Vidahost) Cloud Hosting service also includes free eCommerce/webshop software as well.

Joomla utilises PHP and a MySQL database, all provided as part of the Vidahost hosting package (and all set up automatically for you when you choose to add Joomla from the administration menu)  to control and manage the website dynamically so hopefully the site should develop a more professional and consistent look.  Publishing and changing pages is much easier and faster now and the wysiwyg article editor in Joomla has removed the need to edit HTML by hand while still producing good code and utilising CSS (the whole look of the web site and every page within it can be changed in seconds by simply changing the template the site is based on).
The "Responsive" templates (which enable your web pages to automatically change shape to fit on different size screens when people access your web site by PC, tablets and mobile phones) available with Joomla and several other of the CMS packages, are absolutely essential now if you want to get a good page ranking in Google to allow visitors to actually find your web site.
As part of the package you can also set up forums/bulletin boards and sub-domains (e.g. my son had a private, password protected, sub domain for his GCSE project web site and a private PHP bulletin board/forum for discussions with his friends).
Of course, if you don't want to use any of the free CMS packages you can also just set up your own static web pages using tools such as Serif WebPlus or even hand code them with Windows Notepad! The TSOHOST control panel gives you all the tools you need to upload your completed pages to the web.
The hosting package also provides you with your own email addresses associated with your own web domain(s) with all the necessary email servers set up for you.

I have used this service for ten years now to run multiple web sites and I can recommend it.
